Our students recently completed a hand sewing project focused on creating custom potholders — and the results were absolutely amazing! This project is a hands-on opportunity to build essential life skills. Throughout the process, students practiced:
Time Management: Planning their work and staying on task to meet deadlines.
Communication: Collaborating with peers, asking questions, and sharing techniques.
Following Directions: Carefully executing each step to ensure quality and safety.
Each potholder is a reflection of their creativity, patience, and growing confidence in hand sewing. We’re so proud of their hard work and the beautiful, functional pieces they produced!

🎃 Scarecrow Alert on Main Street! 🏴‍☠️
Our Student Council and SOS program teamed up to decorate one of the Main Street light poles for October — and let’s just say, it’s a must-see! The theme? A Buccaneer-inspired Scarecrow “What’s Your Goal?” complete with little pumpkins holding signs of their goals. 🧡
Now, here’s the twist… we thought the scarecrow’s head was going to be a pumpkin. Spoiler alert: it’s not. And honestly? It’s hilariously perfect! 😂
You’ll find it right in front of the courthouse. There’s a tote next to the straw bales with a whiteboard and markers — write down your goal and snap a pic with Captain Leput Sparrow herself!
📸 Drop your photo in the comments of this post — we can’t wait to see your goals and your pirate poses!

Our B-UMS Wellness teachers are dedicated to helping students get healthier in Upshur County! Through an exciting partnership with Upshur County Commissioner Kristie Tenney and West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, our students are taking part in the Mountaineer Mile every Tuesday and Thursday during Wellness class. Each session, students complete a 15-minute endurance run while tracking their laps using county technology.
We are thrilled to recognize our top three students for their amazing efforts so far:
🥇 Gunnar Claypool, 8th grade - 15.1 Miles
🥈 Emory Hall, 8th grade- 15 Miles
🥉 Will Frye, 8th grade- 13.5 Miles
Together, our 7th and 8th grade students have completed 1,784 miles this first semester – the distance from Upshur County to Thompson Springs, Utah! We can’t wait to welcome our 6th grade students into the program after their Health rotation next week!
Let’s keep moving, Buccaneers!
